Central Government Cabinet Minister, Mr. G.k. Vasan, informed that he hoped the new 11-acre parking facility for container trucks at Thiruvotriyur will considerable ease the prevailing traffic congestion in North Chennai.

The container trucks coming to the Chennai Port area have created heavy traffic congestion in the roads of North Madras, including the Ennore Beach Road posing problems for the travelling public. The Chennai Port has constructed the 11-acre parking terminus at Thiruvotriyur to ease this traffic congestion.

The parking terminus was inaugurated by Mr.k. Vasan on 28th November. The Central Warehouse Depot has been entrusted with the responsibility for checking the parking arrangements and associated activities. The contract signing was completed recently.

Chennai Port President Mr. Atulya Mishra and the Central Warehouse Managing Director, Mr. Patnayak signed the contract. After the contract signing, Minister Vasan spoke:“The Central government received 11.29 acres from the Tamil Nadu State Government and constructed the parking terminus at the cost of Rs. 5.81 Crores I consider this as one of the important projects carried out by the Chennai Port. Initially, vehicles coming from Ennore Beach Road will be allowed to park hereafter the issue of the necessary passes. Arrangements for conducting the Customs check in the terminus itself are being made by getting the necessary permits and clearances from the Customs department.

I am certain that this would ease the prevailing traffic congestion to a great extent and the public would get relieved. The long-time demand from the North Chennai residents has been answered. At the same time, it is not enough just to blame the container trucks for the prevailing trafiic problems. A detailed study should be conducted on the existing infrastructure on rods and parking systems, the bulk of the travelling population and remedial action should be planned and executed.

At the Chennai Port, various improvement projects have been taken up including the repir and improvement of railway tracks. It is expected that goods handling by using railway would increase from 7% to 30% which is likely to reduce the number and movement of container trucks. The new Parking Terminus would serve as a model to show the trouble-free movement and parking of the container-trucks.”

To the question raised by the reporters on when the link road between the Port and the parking terminus will be completed, the minister replied that the national roadways were carrying out the tasks in a systematic way. The link road is executed to be completed before end January, 2014.and declared open for the public. There were difficulties in claiming some land in NTO slum and Cherian Nagar areas. The state government should look into this.”
