General Manager Rakesh Misra has mentioned that he has decided to invite Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the centenary celebrations of Pamban rail bridge to be held in Mandapam near here on February 24 2014
Talking to reporters after inspecting the function venue at Mandapam, he said former President A P J Abdul Kalam, a native of Rameswaram would be the chief guest of the function and the Southern Railway has decided to invite Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, Delhi Metro architect E.Sreedharan besides Ms. Jayalalithaa.
The main function would be held in front of the Mandapam Railway station on February 24, when the rail bridge, India’s first cantilever bridge would turn 100 years and a brief function would be held at Pamban on the same day. After the main function, the dignitaries would be taken by a special train across the rail bridge to Pamban, where the chief guest would unveil a plaque in commemoration of the centenary celebrations.
The main function could not be held in
Pamban for want of space and security reasons. However, the District Collector
would take a final call after inspecting the venues as the State government has
to provide security and control the crowd.
