The transport department has worked out new strategies to enforce the rule for the several autorickshaw drivers who are refusing to charge customers by the meter. The traffic police have also promised to intensify the drive against autorickshaw drivers who continue to demand exorbitant fares.

Motor vehicle inspectors will carry out checks in plainclothes to see if autorickshaw drivers are charging by the meter. The department is also changing the way officials will be deployed in the city. Instead of having 13 teams scattered all along the city, they will be clustered in a single zone to make enforcement tighter. They move around within a zone for five to six days and make concerted efforts. They will then move to the next area.    According to officials, more than 60,000 of the city’s 71,000 autos have recalibrated meters. However, there is no end to the hassles commuters face.Officials from the state transport authority say they have not received enough complaints to take action against drivers who do not charge by the meter
