The Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, on Friday, launched a separate unit for transnasal endoscopic skull base surgery. In the unit, which was sanctioned in October, 10 surgeries have been performed so far.

Dean V. Kanagasabai said these surgeries, which could cost not less than Rs. 2 to 3 lakh in private hospitals, are not only done free of cost at the hospital but have also reduced hospital stay for patients. “In conventional surgeries patients are required to stay in the hospital for three weeks, whereas a patient who undergoes endoscopic skull base surgery could be discharged in less than three days,” he said.

Endoscopic skull base surgery requires coordinated team work.A two-day live surgical workshop and lecture demonstration was also inaugurated on the occasion.
