Tamil Nadu State Government Food Minister R Kamaraj had mentioned that the government has extended the validity of existing family cards (ration cards) from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014. Additional sheets for 2014 have already been inserted in the existing cards. Therefore, people can use the same card in PDS outlets.
This comes against the backdrop of delay in collecting biometric data of individuals under the National Population Register by the census department. The government wants to use the biometric parameters of individuals for its plan to issue biometric based smart family cards for consumers.
Earlier, the state government announced its plan to launch a pilot scheme for smart family cards in Pudukkottai district. Given the fact that the state has a biometric coverage of only 77% and Chennai only 52%, the civil supplies department has now decided to roll out the scheme across the state after the general elections.
