To alleviate the shortage of sand, 12 sand quarries are to be opened in the 3 districts of  Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, and Villupuram.

In recent times, there has been a shortage of sand in the state. Because of this, construction activities worth several crores of Rupees have come to a standstill.

The artificially created shortage has raised the price of sand several times. The industry of the construction and building has been greatly affected.

The government has taken over the sand depots near Maduranthakam where illegal activities were rampant. Seizing the 59,000 truck-load sand, the government is organizing the sales of this. However, the severe shortage of sand persists.

In order to alleviate the shortage of river sand quarries, the Government has decided to open 12 new sand quarries to be located at Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, and Villupuram. These will operate once permission from State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority is obtained.

50 thousand truck-load of sand is in stock in Kancheepuram. This is being sold until the next 2 months. The current price per truck-load is is Rs. 630/-. The price per truck-load of the new sand quarries is to be fixed at Rs. 840/-.
