New pavements are being laid out in full swing at 7 locations in Chennai. The pavements will have facilities for the differently abled.
Chennai Corporation
planned for the relaying of 250 pavements in the city which would ensure no
obstacles for the public and differently-abled to use them. 55 pavements were
taken up in the first stage.
Pavement relaying with
granite is nearing completion in 7 roads – Collectors’ office road, Pantheon
Road, Vannell’s Road, Bharathidasan Road, Conran Smith Road, Mahalingapuram
Main Road, 70’ Scheme road, and Dr. MGR Road.
New features have
been introduced on these pavements: Granite pillars will be installed at the
edge of the 2-metre wide pavements to prevent car-parking. The width of the pavements
will be in accordance with the width of the road to prevent traffic jams and accidents.
The edges and corners of the pavements will have reflectors (on a trial basis)
to warn the blind people.
