The Tamil Nadu Milk Producers’ Welfare Association have decided to launch an indefinite state-wide strike from Tuesday in a attempt to press the government to hike the procurement price of milk.

According to K A Sengotuvel, president of the association, as the State government had not responded to their appeal for talks, milk producers have decided to go ahead with their strike plan from Tuesday. Farmers all over the state would bring their cattle to the streets as a mark of protest and also stop supplies to cooperative societies, he added.

The association has been demanding a hike in procurement price of cow and buffalo milk for sometime now. Earlier this year, the government had raised the procurement price of cow milk from Rs 20 to Rs 23 and buffalo milk from Rs 28 to Rs 31 per litre. However, the association had said that considering the exorbitant increase in cost of inputs, the hike was insufficient. They have been demanding Rs 30 for cow and Rs 40 per litre of buffalo milk, besides seeking an incentive of Rs3 per litre.
