Now there is good news for Chennai people as well as Odisha people. Air India is resuming its Bhubaneswar-Chennai-Bhubaneswar flight, discontinued about four years ago, while leading low cost airline Indigo is all set to introduce three more flights from Bhubaneswar from March 30.

Restoration of the Chennai flight from the Biju Patnaik airport here is part of the summer schedule submitted by Air India to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) recently.

“Both the airlines have submitted summer schedule and will add more flights to New Delhi, Vizag and Bangalore from March-end,” Airport director Sharad Kumar said.

There had been widespread resentment in Odisha after Air India decided to scrap its Bhubaneswar-Chennai services citing ‘poor traffic’ from the city.

At present, state-run Air India is operating three flights from Bhubaneswar: to New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.

Private carrier Indigo, meanwhile, is planning to introduce flight services fromBhubaneswar to New Delhi, Bangalore and Vishakhapatnam from March 30.

With this, Indigo will operate a total of 12 flights per day from the Biju Patnaik airport. Currently, it is operating nine flights to New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Vishakhapatnam.

However, there will still be no direct flights from the Odisha capital to Bangalore even after the introduction of the new services.

Jet Airways, it may be noted, had discontinued all three flights to the city, including the sole direct flight to Bangalore, on October 27, 2013.
