Private garbage trucks are allowed to dump garbage in the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumping yards. These do not come into the Chennai Corporation’s account. Because of this, Chennai Corporation loses about Rs. 1.5 Crores every year.

The garbage collected from various parts of the city is dumped in the dumping yards at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur. However, apart from the Chennai Corporation trucks, private garbage trucks also dump garbage here.

For every additional 100 Tons of garbage, the private garbage trucks have to pay Rs. 464 to the Chennai Corporation. However, these trucks have not been paying while continuing to dump garbage. This happens mostly during the nights. Around 40 dump trucks dump the garbage every night at both the yards. Each dump truck carries about 2.5 tons of garbage. Thus, for 40 trucks, 100 tons of garbage is not accounted for. This results in a loss of Rs. 1.5 Core per year apart for the additional garbage to be handled.

This has been happening in spite of the surveillance facilities such as video-cameras. Plans are made to investigate the officials by the Vigilance Department. Environment officers have demanded immediate action on the concerned officials and staff.
