Twinkling LEDs across Chennai

The Chennai Corporation recently derived a scheme to install over 1,10,000 LED street lights in the city. The process is underway and the recently opened flyover in Mint is the first in the city to have the lights. The corporation has already installed over twelve thousand lights in the city’s suburb areas. These lights are of 40 Watt, whereas the ones used in Mint flyover is higher in intensity, i.e. 150 Watt. The Mint flyover is fitted with lights just as the initial stage of testing the new scheme. Further to this, many more LEDs will be fitted at various flyovers of the city.

To note, these LED lights cost twice than the conventional sodium vapor lamps used. However, comparing these two, the consumption of power is significantly lesser in LEDs. They consume just 150 Watt whereas sodium vapor lamps need 250 Watt. The difference in installation charges will thus eventually get offset by the electricity consumption.
