Devotees thronged for the Darshan of Kapaliswara Temple in Mylapore.
Sri Kapaliswara temple in Mylapore and the four Mada streets wear a festive look for the ongoing Panguni Peruvizha, which began from March 7, with the hoisting of holy flag at the temple.
The fifth day of the celebration is very important as the presiding deity of the temple Lord Kapaliswara, his consort Sri Karpagambal, Sri Singaravelar and his consorts and Lord Chandikeswara, collectively called ‘Aiynthirumenigal’ (five holy idols) come in a procession on Velvidai (Rishaba Vahanam) in the wee hours.
A large number of devotees gathered in front of the temple in the wee hours (from 12.30 midnight) on Wednesday to witness the darshan of Sri Kapaliswara and other deities.
Lord Vigneswara came out the temple first followed by Lord Kapaliswara and other deities. There were extensive rituals which lasted for about one hour and the devotees went ecstatic as the deities moved on palanquins. The procession went around the four Mada streets from 1 pm to 5 pm and devotees worshipped the deities with fervour. Women and girls welcomed the deities by drawing kolam on the roads.
On March 13, car festival would be held. The temple car will start from 8 am on that day and would go around the Mada streets. People from various parts of the city will throng Mylapore on that day. On March 14, the arupathumoovar vizha (the procession of 63 Saivant saints) will be celebrated. The temple administration has made elaborate security arrangements for the celebrations in the coming days.
From March 18 to March 28, Vidaiyatri Peruvizha, which comprises music and dance festival will be held in the premises of Sri Kapaliswarar temple. Well known singers and dancers will perform during this festival.
