Many planned projects in the railway department have been remaining untouched by the party manifestos. One among such projects which is still on the drawing board is the coastal line which will connect Chennai and Kanyakumari through Pondicherry, Cuddalore and Karaikal.

Because of the crisis many of the sanctioned projects during UPA-I got held up, says the railway officials. Officials say fiscal support from state government may help the will help, since the regular budgetary mechanism does not work out here as it will not promise worthy returns on the investments.

New coastal line railway project will ease the travel misery of the public and also it helps in the progression of the coastal areas as its economy is highly centered on ports and pilgrim centers. This new line will interlink Chennai to Cuddalore port; Karaikal port; pilgrim centre of Velankanni; Tuticorin port and Kanyakumari port.

As of now, the railway line across Chennai to Cuddalore via Mamallapuram and Pondicherry has been sanctioned. Rest will be surveyed for land acquisition and cost estimate.

Coastal towns, which are not connected efficiently by railways, can also be interconnected via this coastal line train; this will give more options for pilgrims, said a senior railway official.
