In order to prevent power break-dons and reduce losses due to leakage and transmission, and to prevent political parties stealing power during election campaign meetings, 1000 new junction boxes are being installed in Chennai.

Power distribution in Chennai is mostly through underground cables. Junction boxes have been installed in Roads, streets, and lanes for the distribution of power. Power is distributed to the residences, shops, and other commercial establishments.

Most of these junction boxes are quite old, having been installed several years ago. They have been rusted and some of the doors of the junction boxes have come off. Because of these damages, the cables connected inside the junction boxes tend to get cut causing power failure. This also leads to power leakage.

With many junction boxes in ‘open’ position, it becomes very easy to connect and steal power form these junction boxes. During the current election time, there have been reports to TNEB about stealing power for conducting election meeting.

In order to act on the customers; complaints, the senior officials of TANGEDCO had a meeting and decided to replace th old junction boxes.

Mr. R. Anbazhagan, General Secretary of the Netaji Transport Corporation Employees’ Union, had submitted a petition to the court for replacement of old junction boxes during the year 2012. The court conducted a hearing and ordered that the old and open junction boxes should be immediately replaced.

So, the replacement of old junction boxes with new ones has been taken u. In the first stage, 1000 junction boxes are being replaced. Junction Boxes lying in the main roads are replaced first. Replacement of old junction boxes in other roads, streets, and lanes will be taken up after this.
