There are many factors hidden behind the change of old picture tube televisions, that include it occupies lot of space, lack in clarity and sound effects when compared to the newer flat screen versions.

Currently, the sale of flat screen and curved screen TVs is mounting high, owing to the upcoming World Cup, says Naresh Bangara, secretary of All India Radio and Electronics Association, a Universal organization of wholesale and trade dealers across Chennai.

Since the old televisions value is insignificant, people either contribute the old TV sets to somebody or dump them, he added.

According to the study by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), India’s e-waste will rise from 12.5 lakh tons to 15 lakh tons annually by 2015. Accounting the metros, Mumbai ranks top in generating 96,000 tons annually and Chennai ranks fourth with the generation of about 47,000 tons followed by New Delhi and Bangalore.

Nearly all of the e-waste accumulated from the minor computer firms traps up in landfills. We have suggested a veto on disposing e-waste in landfills, says the Infrastructure Management and Advisory Services, a specialist allotted by the corporation during 2008.
