Quality versus Quantity Debate on Engineering Seats!

The endorsement of five additional engineering colleges across the state has stimulated the dispute on ‘Quality Vs Quantity’. The number of vacancies in academic institution every year, has brings in the call for the All-India Council for Technical Education to accord sanction for new institutions.
Athwart the country, many colleges are getting closed. For example, nearly 6 colleges were opened during 2012 to 2014, and about 13 colleges got closed in Andhra Pradesh. In the course of the same period, more than 30 colleges opened in TamilNadu, but none of them blackout.
During the academic year 2013-2014, nearly 80,000 seats out of the 2 lakhs seats were prevail vacant in the colleges under Anna University in Chennai. Moreover this year, the received engineering seats applications were 10 percent less when compared to the last year.
Many engineering colleges under the authorization of Anna University do not have the adequate amenities to yield better results and the present years Anna University’s success percentage is the evidence for it, said an educational counselor.
The commencement of new colleges will in turn make sure the survival of the qualified institutions, says S. S. Mantha, AICTE chairman. The vacancies in the old colleges, doesn’t mean that the newly established institutions will also deprive of students, he added.
