Posted on: 18/Jun/2014 3:57:38 PM
Chennai’s wholesale vegetable market at Koyambedu received vegetables from other states, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala, and other Tamil Nadu Southern Districts. However, the quantity received has reduced over the last few weeks. Because of this, the processes of vegetables have increased.

The price of tomato per kg was Rs. 10/- last week. Now, it has increased to Rs. 15/- per kilo. The retailers sell at Rs. 20/- per kg.

The price of big onions has increased from Rs. 20/- per kg to Rs. 25/-. Small onion price has increased to Rs. 25/- per kilo. Potato is sold at Rs. 25/- per kg.

Drumstick is sold at Rs. 100/- per kg. Ginger is also sold at Rs. 100/- per kg. Beans is sold at Rs. 90/- per kg, flat beans at Rs. 60/- per kg and carrot at Rs. 35/- per kg.

Lady’s finger (okra) is sold at Rs. 25/- per kg. Slender beans is sold at Rs. Rs. 20/- per kg. Radish is sold at Rs. 25/- per kg. Cabbage is sold at Rs. 15/- per kg, green chilies at Rs. 25/- per kg.

Outside Koyambedu, the vegetables are sold at a higher rate from Rs. 5/- to Rs. 10/- per kg.

Reason

Usually, 500 trucks deliver vegetables at Koyambedu. With severe summer, the vegetable growth has been affected. This has led to lesser quantities reaching Koyambedu. Also, there are more frequent ‘Muhurtham days’ (auspicious days for conducting good events in the family) leading to increase in demand.

All these reasons have contributed to price rise in vegetables. However, the quantity of fruits reaching Koyambedu has not been affected. Hence, the prices of fruits have stabilised at a cheaper rate.
