Adi Dravidar Welfare Minister announced in the assembly that the prize money
given to the students of the scheduled castes/scheduled tribes securing high marks
would be increased. The prize money for the first rank, second rank, and third
rank holders of 10th standards would be Rs 25000, Rs 20000, and Rs 15000
respectively. The prize money for the first rank, second rank, and third rank
holders of 12th standards would be Rs 50000, Rs 30000, and Rs 20000
respectively. Further the assistance given as special scholarship to Medical
would be treated as full grant. The annual income
limit of parents of students who want to avail themselves of overseas
scholarship has been revised to Rs. 3 lakh from the existing Rs. 1.44 lakh.
Work on constructing 25 new hostels
would begin this year. In view of the demand for more accommodation in the
existing hostels for SC students, the capacity of the hostels would be
increased to accommodate 1,000 more. Currently, 1,229 hostels had 84,886 students.
The Minister also announced that 10 SC/ST middle schools and four high schools
would be graded into high and higher secondary schools at a cost of about Rs. 5
crore..
