Anna University, Chennai has launched a Tamil
online dictionary. The Dictionary will have the meanings of words and usages in
Thirukkural, Bharathiyar`s songs and Avvaiyar`s poems along with synonyms. This
is the initiative of the computing labs in Anna University.
The labhas come up with a host of other online products. Lab has also a fully
functional concept based search engine, CoRee.
Anna University`s Department of Computer Science
professor T.V. Geetha told reporters that the Tamil Computing Lab (TaCoLa) has
produced an online Tamil dictionary, www.agaraadhi.com, presenting 20 features,
including word suggestions, word popularity, picture dictionary and social net
sharing.

Karky, an assistant professor, said the online dictionary has 2.5 lakh words at
present. “We are adding 10,000 words every month. Last month, computer science
dictionary was included. Now, we are adding medical dictionary. Finally, the
online dictionary will have about 7 lakh words,” he said.
It has a
social networking analysis tool for Tamil which will track usage of the words
on Twitter and blogging sites. Games to follow soon
The
computing labs in Anna University have come up with a host of online
products, including a search engine and dictionary, to further the use of Tamil
on the internet, said P. Mannar Jawahar, Vice-Chancellor, Anna Universitye>,
Chennai.
The lab has
also a fully functional concept based search engine, CoRee, developed for an
Indian language.
The search
engine tries to understand Tamil web documents rather than just remembering the
keywords like the traditional search engines, Ms. Geetha said.

Chandrasekhar, who provided Rs.9 crore for setting up the AU-KBC Centre, said
the labs were instituted to conduct research into new technologies which will
bridge the digital divide.
