The Tamil Nadu State Government has the new fares, the minimum charge is Rs. 25 for the first 1.8km and Rs.12 for every additional kilometer. Night fares, to be enforced between 11pm and 5am, would be 50 per cent more than the daytime fares. The waiting charge has been fixed at Rs 3.50 for every five minutes.

After careful examination, the government has decided to revise fares for autos in Coimbatore and other districts on a par with auto fares fixed for Chennai Metropolitan area..

Consumer activists and residents are thrilled by this recent announcement. "The new fares are a result of a decade of PILs and protests," said N Logu, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Voice, who had also filed a writ petition with the Madras high court. It was based on the petition that the high court directed the government to fix fares.

Soon after the fare was revised in Chennai last year, consumer activists demanded fare revision for Coimbatore auto drivers. The district administration too sent a report to the state government, but there was no action. Subsequently, a petition was filed with the Madras high court.

The transport authorities have instructed the auto rickshaw owners to ensure their meters run based on the new fares within 60 days. Mechanical meters should be replaced with electronic meters within 90 days with immediate effect. The tariff card should be displayed on all vehicles.
