Transport Minister K.N. Nehru announced that The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has completed a preliminary study on the introduction of mini-buses in the city. The MTC has placed orders for 300 mini buses to be operated in various districts. In Chennai 100 Mini-bused will be introduced. The mini-bus services are expected to provide a safe and comfortable journey to residents of suburban areas who depend on share auto rickshaws.

A preliminary study was undertaken by MTC to assess the convenience of the public in the suburban areas. Based on the study Mini-buses will  be operated in suburban areas such as Red Hills, Tiruvottiyur, Kelambakkam and Tambaram. Localities that are within four or five km from a major terminus will get preference, a senior MTC official said. “All mini-buses will not ply on new routes.

A multi-route operational strategy will be adopted in order to cater for more than one locality while announcing the introduction of mini-buses within three months in the Assembly on April 29; Mr. Nehru said “If there are 100 families in an area, we will operate a bus. Anna University will be commissioned to do a study to determine the routes.”

The Mini buses will adhere to Bharat Stage IV carbon emission standards
Presently, 4,000 private mini-buses operate in several districts in Tamil Nadu. Private companies cannot operate mini-buses in Chennai because MTC alone has the area permit.
