The central government has planned to give legal approval for the ‘Hallmark’ Quality certificate for gold jewellery.

By amending the ISI Act, the central government will include BIS also as legal proof of quality.

A meeting was conducted in New Delhi under the leadership of Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan, the central minister for Consumer affairs, regarding these amendments.

The minister expressed his concern on the present quality of gold jewellery and tabled a question about including BIS standards legally as proof of quality. He discussed various issues including whether BIS confirms the quality of gold jewellery from 9 carat onward.

A decision was taken to legally include Hallmark quality standard as quality proof.

Though Hallmark quality was introduced in 2000, only a few jewellery companies have paid and got the Hallmark quality approval system.
