The World Bank in one of its releases has appreciated the initiative of the Tamilnadu Government’s in extending public health services successfully through a network of district and taluk level hospitals, primary health centres and health sub-centres. The World Bank had evaluated three of the schemes undertaken as part of the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project to improve the health status of the people. The World Bank has special mention for the 24 hours comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care centres set up in government hospitals, pilot schemes of cardio vascular diseases prevention and treatment and a web based hospital management information system implemented in 45 government hospitals, as models worth being replicated by other states. The release further said that the Chief Minister had extended the prevention and treatment of cardio vascular diseases and cervical cancer screening programmes to all the districts at a cost of Rs.193 crore
