Girl students studying in Karaikkudi Umayal Ramanathapuram have made a relatively very cheap design process for treating briny (salt) water to become potable (drinking) water.
This design has won the States 1st Award!
Solar light is one commodity that everyone has without any limitations. The girl students have discovered that converting the briny water into steam and condensing can make it potable.
The students, Keerthika, Karthika, and Devimuthu belong to the electronics & Communication Department of Karaikkudi Umayal Ramanathan College. They explained:
The process is called ‘Desalination of salty water to Drinking water’.
It converts briny water to potable water.
This process can be easily done inside the house under minimum expenses using some rejected material lying in the house.
Take a sheet of asbestos/iron/tin lying unused. Paint it completely black. (Black colour absorbs solar heat in full). Keep this on a wooden or card-board box. Keep the vessel on top of this painted sheet & pour water in it. Due to solar heat, the water will vaporise. By drilling a hole in the vessel and fixing a tube on this hole, collect the vaporised water in a (plastic) container. Cover the vessel collecting water with a damp cloth to protect from the sun.
The collected water is now ready for use. Start taking water out only after the collecting vessel gets full ensuring that the tube connection is clipped and stays tight.
Almost all required material for the process is available already in most houses. The students spent only Rs. 15/- to arrange the system & process.
If fresh material is to be bought, the cost may be around Rs. 100/-. Depending on the usage & quantity, 1 litre of water can converted to be potable every day.
They got the idea from the observation that rain is created after evaporation from sea, forming clouds and then pouring.
The principal of the college and the head of the department of Chemistry gave valuable guidance.
In the recent competition held at Madurai on ‘Water Management’, this won appreciation from ISRO scientists and also won the state 1st prize with a cash award of Rs. 10000/-.
