Soak channa dal in water for an hour before preparation of the Kootu.
Clean Vazhaipoo poo thoroughly and chop it in to small pieces. Add 1 spoon of curd to a bowl of water immerse the chopped banana flower in it.
Drain both the vazhaipoo and channa dal and place it in a pressure cooker. Add required quantity of water till the channa dal gets boiled well and add turmeric powder, and salt. Cook the contents well for about 3 whistles.
In the meantime, dry roast all the ingredients given under roast and grind column except coconut. Add it to the mixer. Now add coconut and add minimum quantity of water. Grind it to a coarse paste.
Heat a pan with a spoon of oil. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves and wait until the seeds gets splutter.
Then add the chopped onion and sauté it well until its colour turns golden brown.
Now add the boiled channa dal and vazhaipoo to it.
Add the grinded coarse paste to it and stir well until the contents gets blend well.
Sauté it well for about 2 minutes and serve hot!
Vazhaipoo Kootu goes fine either as a side dish for rice or mixed along with the rice.
Tips:
Instead of channa dal, you can very well add moong dal to prepare vazhaipoo Kootu.
In case of moong, avoid the section given under roast and fry column.
Vazhaipoo (Banana flower) is very healthful for woman if all ages.
