Chennai City Police Women Helpline 1091

The city police are taking all precautionary measures to ensure protection of women by way of opening special women police station, running a helpline (1091).Chennai City Police has received a total of 1,078 calls last year. There were 806 and 814 calls during 2012 and 2013 respectively.
Family problems, eve-teasing and domestic violence have been the major reasons for making the distress calls and complaints are usually against abusing male partners, in-laws and harassing husbands.
There also some distress call regarding drunken husbands. The helpline has also dealt with issues relating to the elderly, though there is a separate helpline for them. Women police personnel, who man the helpline round the clock in three shifts, are trained with the collaboration of NGOs.
