Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated a de-addiction centre of Chennai Corporation at a function in Chennai on Sunday. Union Minister for Textiles Dayanidhi Maran and Mayor M. Subramanian were present in the function. It is a 20-bed special welfare centre for de-addiction situated on Hyder Ali Street, Royapettah.
The centre will provide treatment for insomnia, withdrawal symptoms and co-existing mental disorders and there will be also expert counseling to individuals and group counseling will be available. The de-addiction centre initiative by Chennai Corporation is because a study under taken by The Hindu and TT Ranganathan Clinical Research Foundation indicated that among 25,000 conservancy workers of the Chennai Corporation; about 10 to 15 per cent of those surveyed were addicted to alcohol. A consultant psychiatrist from the Corporation has been appointed for the project. N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chennai Corporation to establish a centre and provide premises for treatment of alcohol addiction. The Hindu`s welfare centre will provide guidance and expertise for patient support.
Further M K. Stalin distributed appointment orders to eight persons recruited through the employment exchange at a function organised in Gopalapuram and distributed bicycles to 2,290 students belonging to Chennai Schools in the constituency. He also distributed cheques worth Rs.3.60 lakh to 16 women under the Moovalar Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Nianaivu marriage assistance scheme and 50 women were provided financial under the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme.
