Adyar Cancer Institute turns to be center of excellence

Adyar Cancer Institute is all set to turn as the center of excellence and State Cancer Centers it has received approval from the center.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalitha in the assembly. She did praise the excellence of work done by the institute in giving good treatment to cancer patients for several years. This upgrading of the institute will be done at a cost of Rs 120 crore. To note, the Chief Minister penned a letter to the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking approval for upgrading the institute.

The center has to be upgraded as the national center. This is long pending from the end of Union ministry of health and family welfare. This has to be approved so that it can be expanded and strengthened in its capacity to provide better treatment to cancer patients, said Jayalalitha. Speaking at the assembly on Tuesday, she added that the request for making the cancer institute a center for excellence has received approval. This will be made spending Rs 120 crore. A mammography equipment will be provided by the state to 15 district government hospitals which will involve Rs 2.25 crore.

Dr V Shanta the chairperson of Adyar Cancer Institute thanked the CM for the same. She said the funds allotted to it will be spent in the following ten years. These can be of help in purchasing equipment`s and construction purpose, she added. These however cannot be used for paying our employees or to maintain the building. This is a great honor that our works have got enough recognition.

She added that Cancer institute is the leader in this field, the institute can play a leadership role in providing cancer treatment.

I dream of assuming leadership role and coordinate in all the prevention measures and screening performed in several centers. We can also gather data from all these centers and analyse it, Dr Shanta stated.
