Price of the high quality rice arriving from the states of Karnataka and Andhra has gone up by Rs. 4/- per kg. However, the price of rice for certain kinds, like `Gundarisi`, `deluxe`, etc has come down.

Though the rice harvesting is reasonable in Tamil Nadu, as the demands are not met, Tamil Nadu has to depend on the neighboring states of Karnataka and Andhra to meet this demand.

`Patla` rice is procured from Andhra while `Sona` and `Kaveri sona` brands of rice are procured from Karnataka. As seasonal rains failed in Andhra & Karnataka, the price of rice has increased by Rs. 100/- to Rs. 200/- per bag. Hence, the price of these rice brands has gone up by Rs. 2/- to Rs. 4/- per kg.

In retail, 1kg of sona rice is sold at Rs. 44/- to Rs. 46/- per kg. White Ponni is sold at Rs. 44/- to Rs. 48/- per kg. Raichur raw rice is sold at Rs. 37/- to Rs. 40/- per kg. Patla is sold at Rs. 38/- to Rs. 40/- per kg.

Rice trader Mr. Srinivasan from Sevvaipettai, Salem informed that harvesting is scheduled in Tamil Nadu only in November. Hence, there are prospects of rice prices going up further. With the rice prices from other states rising, the people are worried whether the prices of all other varieties will also rise.

The president of Tamil Nadu wholesale Rice traders` Association, Mr. Thulasingam, informed that the prices of rice from neighboring states has gone up by a small margin. The price of some other rice brands like gundarisi, ATT 45, and deluxe has gone down by Rs. 1/- to Rs. 2/- per kg. There are no prospects of the price of other brands of rice to go up.
