39th Hong Kong Arts Festival

Power Plant “a special programme of the 39th Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF)” has finally kicked off. While almost all past events of the HKAF took place in theatres or concert halls, Power Plant takes us out to a park, or more specifically, the Kowloon Walled City Park. With nature as its theme and inspiration, Power Plant is an outdoor installation art exhibition which combines artistic and technological elements, including illumination, fireworks, sculpture, video and live music. The exhibition gathers more than 20 pieces of artwork created by UK artists, which are scattered in different parts of the park. One can find water lily-like flames dancing rhythmically in the pond, eerie sounds from gramophones playing records made of chipped mirror, and wandering snails filmed live and projected onto a kaleidoscope, creating a futuristic wildlife documentary. Power Plant does not only add sound and light to the park, but also expresses the artist’s appreciation of Mother Nature through technology. It also breathes new life to the venue, where spectators become part of an organic mega art installation. The Power Plant artists, who submerge themselves in the park, improvise image- and sound-making as their interaction with the audience. Breaking down artistic traditions, the event would definitely stimulate everyone’s senses!

The 39th Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) will go on till 27th March 2011.
