Chipset that can monitor heartbeat developed

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad has developed a 5 mm chipset that can be worn as a pendant. It is connected to ECG leads on the chest and can interpret any abnormality in the heartbeat. This will reduce hospital stay, while keeping a constant check.

According to the team of developers, the chipset can monitor heart beat continuously. It will send an alert to the user and the doctor if there are any variations in the heart`s rhythm. It also maintains a medical history of the user. The initial tests have shown 95 percent accuracy. The sets will be put to test in field trials next.

The chipset leads ECG leads and a mobile app to send the signals. In case of abnormalities, the entire chip is activated. The user is alerted through the smartphone application that it is connected to. It also alerts and transmits the ECG signals to the concerned doctor. Contact details of the doctor can be pre stored.

Said one of the developers, The technology (has) novelties, including an embedded intelligence that can interpret the difference between ECG abnormalities that may or may not require medical attention. There are several wearable devices that can keep track of the heart rhythm. But they are all connected to a central server to which the ECG signals are transmitted and later interpreted by a medical professional. Our chip does all of this, yet consuming as little as one milliwatt battery power... When compared to a chip that can store five hours of data, our chip can save 35 hours of data in a compressed format.
