The National Employability Report 2015 - 16 has said that graduates from Tamil Nadu are not top in employability. The State has ranked in the bottom for two consecutive years.

The report was released by employability evaluation and certification company Aspiring Minds. They studied 150,000 students from more than 650 engineering colleges. The ranking are divided into four sectors of 25 percent each. In the top 25 percent are Bihar, Delhi, Kerala and Odisha. In the bottom 25 percent are Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh.

Tamil Nadu`s IT-BPO industry adds about 45,000 freshers a year. These include on campus and off campus recruits.

Among the southern states, Kerala in on top, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh includes Telangana.

An official from Aspiring Minds has said, Poor unemployability has been a constant trend over five years... 80 percent of the country`s engineers are unemployable. Colleges are clearly not teaching conceptual and problem-solving skills. Rote learning is still a major issue. Less than 10 perecnt of computer science graduates were able to write programmes for companies, which is a basic requirement. One of the main reasons for poor employability is that a majority of those entering engineering don`t have basic numerical skills or aptitude. Delhi has less than 100 engineering colleges but they are quality institutions. In Tamil Nadu, the ratio of college seats per student is uneven.Having a very high number of colleges also may lead to a decline in quality. Along with improving education standards, it is essential that we evolve our undergraduate programmes to make them more job centric.
