Surge in city pollution level

Posted on: 08/Feb/2016 10:39:40 AM
Pollution level in air in the city is rising to exorbitant levels at Adyar and Alandur. The allowed measure of Particulate matter (PM 2.5) is 60gm3, whereas it reached 404 micrograms cubic metre (gm3) in these areas.

The measure in Alandur on Friday was recorded as 330gm3. The same was shockingly 40gm3 two days earlier.

However, according to experts, the level may once again dip as summer days are likely to begin in a few days.

According to one of the officials at the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, winter air resists vertical mixing of various atmospheric layers close to ground. These remain unable to disperse the suspended pollutants.

There is an increasing in cases with breathing troubles, say Dr R Sridharan, consultant to Allergy and Ashtma Resource Centre which he adds to be due to increase in air pollution. Doctors insist on frequent outdoor walks and keeping the windows open for those with breathing troubles. Pollution levels double that of permitted levels was observed on Sunday. There was an official recording of 92gm3 at IIT-M Adyar and 127gm3 in Alandur.
