Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) had floated tenders to implement geographical information system (GIS). Now there is news that this job was entrusted to a firm in the year 2010 and it has not completed it till now.
GIS is a database system, which analyses and displays digitized maps and tables through a software tool. Maps developed for Chennai using GIS applications will be on a 1:1000 scale and would pinpoint the location of utility lines or structures.
Other benefits of the GIS technology included identifying the optimal route plan using different routing algorithms, studying the sag in the transmission lines to minimize transmission loss, monitoring faults without going to sites and evaluating the performance of hydel power stations.
This GIS works are done at a cost of Rs 300 Crores. The contractor was supposed to complete the work by 2014, but the work was not completed. TNEB extended the time up to June 2016 but the entire work is yet to be completed.
Now TNEB will be taking legal action against the concerned contractor.
