The government of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday justified in the Supreme Court the amendment to the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act to defer implementation of the Uniform System of School Education (`Samacheer system`).

Senior counsel P. P. Rao appearing for the State before a three-judge Bench of justice J.M. Panchal, Justice Deepak Verma and Justice B.S. Chauhan submitted that the object of amendment was not to indefinitely postpone the implementation of the Uniform System.

Responding to a query from Justice Chauhan as to why the provision did not specify any time limit for implementation, Mr. Rao said an undertaking was given by the State Advocate General before a Division Bench of the Madras High Court that the government would implement the uniform syllabus in one year after the deficiencies were rectified.

However, Mr. Rao maintained that the government wanted to review the syllabus through an expert panel and then implement the syllabus in a phased manner.
