Prices of important vegetables like tomatoes have come down due to increased supply of vegetables from other states.
85 percent of vegetables are brought from Andhra and Karnataka to Chennai Koyambedu market for sales.
There was decrease by 40 percent in supply of vegetables from other states during the second week of June. Because of this important vegetables like tomatoes were sold for Rs 100 per kilo. Drumsticks and beans were sold for Rs 130 and Rs 110 respectively.
Since the supplies increased, the prices of vegetables have started coming down.
As on Thursday, the tomatoes for sold for Rs 40-45 and beans were sold between Rs 75 and Rs 85. Drumsticks were sold for Rs 80 per kilo.
R Soundarajan, market advisor to the wholesaler`s association in Koyambedu while speaking about prices coming down said: Some of the States including Odisha were procuring huge quantities of vegetables from Andhra, Karnataka and Maharashtra States. Since there is heavy harvest in Bihar and Odisha, the supply of vegetables to these states have been stopped. These surplus vegetables are being sent to Chennai. Because of this, the prices are coming down.
