Railway administration is implementing the greenery scheme in its railway stations. Saplings have been planted in some of the railway stations and the staff’s working in the concerned stations is maintaining these plants. Moreover to encourage this greenery, a new scheme for planning saplings in the railway stations has been introduced. The officials have inspected the railway stations between Chennai Beach and Chengalpet and also the railway stations between Chennai MMC and Tiruvallur with regard to this. Saplings have already been planted in the railway platforms at Perambur, Egmore and Pallavaram stations. At this juncture, the saplings are being now planted in Nungambakkam Railway station.
A railway official while speaking said: Saplings are being planted in railway stations in order to promote greenery. An agreement has been made with the forest department to acquire the saplings. These trees are being planted in the places where there is no shade in the platforms. Five trees are planted in the platforms. The trees are planted in such a way that they do not grow more than 10 feet.
