K. Shanmugam, Secretary, Finance Department has mentioned that The Tamil Nadu government is planning to launch a scheme to revive kudi maramath so that the management of the irrigation and water storage structures is taken up by people at the village level as a mass movement.

The 35th foundation day of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) was organized. Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah participated in the function and distributed prizes to farmers.

The Governor while speaking on this occasion said: Agricultural Sector is the largest employer in India`s economy as over 58 per cent of the rural households depend on it. Agriculture along with fisheries contributes to around 17 per cent of GDP. Farmers are poor people and hence they have to take loans. So awareness regarding banks should be created. NABARD is appreciable because they are helping the farmers through self-help groups.

K. Shanmugam, Secretary, Finance Department, while speaking said: The age-old practice of kudi maramath (community participation) is not visible anywhere now. The State government is making all efforts to revive the irrigation structures to restore its original capacity. NABARD is helping us in a big way.
