India ranks 2nd globally in tsunami warning

People of costal districts especially Chennai will never forget 26th December 2004. That is the day the unheard Tsunami struck the Indian coasts. After this, the government has been taking several steps to prevent this mishap happen again. Now, India ranks 2nd globally in tsunami warning. T. Ramasami, former Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has mentioned this.
Recently he participated in a function where Manonmaniam Sundaranar University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, Mumbai, which will enable the MSU’s Centre for Geo Technology to offer postgraduate programmes and researches leading to award of Ph.D. in geomagnetism and allied fields.
Speaking on this occasion T. Ramasami, former Secretary, Department of Science and Technology said: India was not prepared for the Tsunami that struck in 2004. We never knew what Japan knew. The word Tsunami was also new to us. Now we are the leading country in terms of Tsunami warning systems. In the year 2007 we had devised an extensive plan. We had commissioned early warning system devices in the sea bed of Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. If there is earthquake below the earth, the warning will be sent through satellites to important government offices. The earthquake in the sea may trigger Tsunami. In this case, the warning will be sent to us within 13 minutes. We rank 2nd globally in tsunami warning.
