IRCTC has introduced new kinds of food at Chennai Central and Egmore railway stations. These food items will remain fresh and edible for over 6 months without getting decayed. In a note about the same, the IRCTC higher officials stated that the railway company had introduced these food varieties to meet the needs of passengers traveling at night, as they do not get food during late hours, and for those who make long distant travel.
This initiative is made possible through DFRL functioning under central government. About 8 varieties of food including lemon rice, tamarind rice, vegetable briyani, chicken briyani, dhal rice, and wheat upma. These are packed in a special way that it doesn’t get decayed for six long months.
To start with, this is introduced in Chennai central and Egmore to experiment the scheme. All the above mentioned food items will be available for Rs 24 each for the next two days.
Following this, for about one month, these will be sold for Rs 32 each. DFRL will learn the packing methods for these products from IRCTC. Later, DFRL will incept its own factory for such packaging. Once it is done, the revised rate for these food items will be announced.
These food items need to be put into hot water for about two minutes, and they will become ready for consumption. This scheme is named Ready to Eat. The Chennai Railway Divisional Manager Anupam Sharma inaugurated this move today.
