The Tamil Nadu state government, headed by the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, has been earnestly executing a variety of schemes to ensure the educational development of the school students without any break, especially the students from the economically backward section. The schemes include no education fees, nutritious food, free uniforms, laptop computers, free textbooks, the school study kits, school bags, footwear, bicycles, and incentive cash, and improving the school infrastructure.
Another facility is the distribution of free bus passes issued by the Tamil Nadu Transport Corporations for the students of all schools, special schools for differently-abled, government Arts and Science Colleges, and students of the government polytechnics and Industrial Training Institutes.
During the academic year 2015-16, 3.578 Lakh students benefited by the issue of free bus passes worth Rs. 480 Crores. For the academic year 2016-17, 31.1192 Lakh students will benefit from the free bus passes worth Rs. 504 Crores.
As a token event for the commencement of distribution of free bus passes for the students, the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated this scheme in the government secretariat by distributing free bus passes for 5 students.
