Engineering counselling had got completed yesterday. However, only 44 percent seats have got filled in engineering colleges. Similar to last year, over one lakh seats are vacant.

There are 523 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. Anna University had decided to fill the 1,92,000 seats for B.E and B.Tech through counselling in single window system. There were 1,34,000 applications received from students. On the whole, 84,352 seats were only filled in the counselling and 1,7648 seats are vacant.

Speaking about engineering vacancies more than a lakh this year, educator professor Moorthi Selvakumaran stated that there were 2,20,000 vacancies with engineering last year. One lakh seats were filled and the others remained vacant. In this year, out of 1,92,000 seats, 84,353 seats are filled which means 44 percent of the total number of seats is filled. The major reason for these many vacancies with engineering seats is that many engineering graduates in the previous years are jobless. There are not much job opportunities for engineering studies like before. However, the opportunities for engineering graduates were comparatively higher this year. Nevertheless, this has not reflected in the counselling.

The engineering counselling for this year had started on 27th of June and it got over yesterday. Following this, counselling for diploma students will take place on 23rd and 24th of July i.e. Saturday and Sunday, according to Anna University sources.
