Mainly due to higher growth in Karnataka State, the price of onions has come down steeply in Tamil Nadu.
Onion is cultivated in the Tamil Nadu districts of Dindigul, Theni, Erode, Dharmapuri, Madurai, Pudhukkottai, Tripur and Coimbatore where rain is less. As the demand for onions is higher in Tamil Nadu, onion is transported in 100 to 150 trucks from the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra every day.
The price of onion came down gradually over the last few weeks. Yesterday (Thursday, 21st July) was a peak when the price of big and small onions in Tamil Nadu came down to Rs. 8 - Rs. 14 per kg.
Muthuramalingam, an onion market trader from Keezhamarat Street, Madurai, informed that small onions were sold at Rs. 10/- to Rs. 16/- per kg in Madurai. Big onions are sold at Rs. 8/- to Rs. 14/- per kg. Because of the steep fall in prices, sales in the retail market have picked up while wholesale trading is in losses. Onion is used exclusively for cooking. No price-additive products are made from onions. In the southern states of Karnataka, Andhra, and Tamil Nadu, the harvest of onion has increased. More production has led to the fall in prices.
A V Soundararajan, President of the Dindigul Onion Export Traders Commission, informed that onions from Maharashtra are sold at Rs. 10/- to Rs. 14/- per kg. Mysore small onions are sold at Rs. 7/- to Rs. 15/- per kg. Production has also increased. This is the reason for the steep fall in prices.
