After experiencing oppressive weather for more than a week, Chennaites heaved a sigh with widespread rain showers across Chennai one Tuesday, yesterday. According to weathermen reports, high temperature during day time and rain showers around the evening hours will continue for a few more days.

The deputy director general of Regional Meteorological Centre, S.B. Thambi said this season generally experiences this cycle. In Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, this phenomenon will be observed for three more days, he added.

This rainfall is due to heat convection, said Pradeep John, a weather blogger. Strong sea breeze furthermore induces this convective rain from the coast along inland. In the past few days, the temperature is higher than normal by 3 to 4 degrees. Humid days are likely to continue, but evening spells will be there too, he pointed.

On Tuesday, the temperature was 37.8 degree Celsius. As compared to Chennai’s usual temperature in August, there was 3.7 degree increase yesterday. A similar scenario was noted in Meenambakkam where 37.5 degree Celsius was observed; this is 3.2 degree higher than usual.

People were not only surprised by sudden downpour, but also irked with traffic congestions on roads including Medavakkam Main Road, Anna Salai, GST Road, EVR Periyar Salai, and few others. There was downpour until 9 pm yesterday.
