Chennai Island Grounds gearing up for cracker sales

Chennai Island Grounds is getting ready to sell Rs 20 Crores worth fire crackers for Deepavali festival. It has been announced that the sales of the crackers will begin on 15th October.
Deepavali festival is being celebrated on 29th October. At a time when only 28 days are remaining for the festival there are only few cracker shops here and there in Chennai. At this point of time, the cracker shops will be set up in Island Grounds. There will be a roaring business.
In the year 2010, there was fire accident in the two cracker shops in Parrys Bunder Street. Because of this crackers worth Rs 1 Crore was destroyed in the fire and one person lost his life. In connection with this, the Madras High Court banned the sale of firecrackers in congested areas of Parrys and relocated the business to Island Grounds.
From 2011, the cracker shops are being set up in Island Grounds and crackers are being sold there. Last year there was dullness in the sales of the crackers due to heavy rains in Chennai. Since the unsold crackers could not be stored in Chennai, dealers had to store Rs 3 Crores worth crackers in the godowns of Sivakasi cracker manufacturers’ godowns paying yearly rent.
Fire cracker merchants said: Like last year, this year also there will be new varieties of crackers. There are Rs 50 Crores worth crackers ready for sale throughout Tamil Nadu. On 14th, Rs 20 Crores worth crackers will reach Chennai and its suburbs. The new varieties of fireworks will be dancing wheel, flower wheel, flower bomb, electric stone, colour change butterfly and emerald.
Sheikh Abdullah, secretary, Chennai Metropolitan City Firecrackers Sellers Association while speaking about the sales of fire crackers in Island Grounds said: This year Chennai Metropolitan City Firecrackers Sellers Association and Chennai Fireworks Dealers Welfare Association will be setting up 58 fire crackers shops in Island Grounds. The crackers ordered are already manufactured and is kept ready in the godowns. Once the shops are set up, the crackers will arrive in 8 hours from Sivakasi to Chennai. This year the sales will begin from 15th. The rates have been increased by 10 percent. Crackers gift pack is priced between Rs 250 and Rs 3000.
