A hugely popular snack food item, pani puri is sold in pushcarts in the streets. Many shops are located very near the sewer. The ambiance is quite unhealthy as well.
They break the puri with their thumb, stuff the masala inside and then dip this into the sour chutney (made from mint, coriander, and tamarind) bowl. The dirt settled on the thumb will be transferred to the Pani puri.
What is the effect of eating such unhealthily presented snack item?
One will have to check how clean is the hand of the seller who breaks, stuffs masala in and dips in the pani bowl. It is better to note here that hookworms and pinworms are spread through hands only. So, eating this means a likelihood of worms being produced in the stomach.
If there are any germs or bacteria in the hand, it may lead to infection and diseases like vomiting and diarrhea. There is also the possibility of getting Hepatitis A which spreads through a virus.
It is also proper to check the quality of the oil in which the puris are fried. It is recommended that the oil once used for frying, must not be reused. However, this is totally ignored and the same oil is being used again and again.
The recycled oil is harmful enough to lead to cancer. If the water used for making the pani or mint water is not pure, that can also lead to several harmful effects.
So, it is always better to avoid such items which are sold in the streets in thoroughly unhygienic fashions.
Among the various snack food items, Pani puri is the one dish which has the maximum possibility of infection. It is recommended to avoid eating this item in street pushcarts but take in a place where it is prepared in a healthy way. Especially, it is best for children and pregnant women to avoid this.
There is no health benefit by eating pani puri. Knowing this fully well, why should anyone venture into eating this item and inviting diseases?
