Chennai Meteorological Centre has mentioned that the north east monsoon rains will commence in Tamil Nadu between 25th October and 28th October.

Chennai Meteorological Centre in a statement has mentioned: South west monsoon has now withdrawn from Telangana. Very soon the south west monsoon will withdraw in Tamil Naadu and Kerala. After this the notification about the north east monsoon will be made. October, November and December are the north east monsoon rain season months.

During this period there will be 442 mm rains. Few years ago, this monsoon commenced on 10th October and  in some years it has commenced after 20th October, Normally the north east monsoon will commence on 19th or 20th. This year due to change in wind pattern, the monsoon is getting delayed. A weather system brewing over the Bay of Bengal is moving in the northeast direction and this means the westerly winds will remain for a few more days.

This is the reason for the delay of monsoon. If this weather system was not there, the monsoon would have commenced. In spite of this, it is expected that the north east monsoon will commence between 25th and 28th October, North east monsoon rains have contributed 442 mm of rains from 2006 to 2011. In the year 2012, it was less by 16 percent than the normal rainfall. Again in the year 2013, there was a deficit by 33 percent and in 2014 there was deficit by 2 percent.

Today’s weather forecast

Due to convective activities, there will light showers in Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi and Adirampattinam. There will be no rains in North Tamil Nadu including Chennai. The maximum and minimum temperatures in Chennai will be 34 degrees and 25 degrees Celsius respectively.
