It will take end of this year for the Tambaram railway station into a passenger terminal following the existing ones: Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore. In ten days from now, the necessary civil and mechanical works for Coaching Terminal project will get wrapped up. It will take 30 to 40 days for finishing the water supply mechanism. By the end of December this year, Tambaram will start functioning as the third terminal, according to the General Manager of Southern Railway, Chennai, Vashista Johri.
The works done so far at the coaching depot in Tambaram was inspected by a team of officials headed by the Divisional Railway Manager, Anupam Sharma. During the inspection, he insisted the staff members and contractors to expedite the project and complete within deadline.
At present, works to construct pit lines, stabilizing lines, shunting line in full length, four sick lines for attending compartments that require repair, etc are being carried out. From Tambaram to Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu, over 250 suburban electric trains are presently functional.
People in and around the Tambaram area have been placing demands to set up the station where the footfall is over a lakh every day. If this turns into a passenger terminal, it will be of help for passengers returning from southern parts of the state, as they can avoid heading to Chennai Central or Egmore.
