There are 4750 petrol bunks in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. On an average, each petrol bunk sells about 1.70 Lakh Litres of petrol every month.

The owners of the petrol bunks have been demanding an increase in the commission from the Oil Corporations.

The central government has also recommended the increase in commission. However, the Oil Corporations have not implemented it so far. Hence, the petrol bunk owners announced several stages of protests and demonstrations against the Oil Corporations. Last month, the petrol bunks remained closed between 7.00 PM and the next morning 7.15 AM.From yesterday (Thursday, 3rd November), they have stopped procurement of petrol and diesel.

On this issue, the president of the Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Federation, Mr. Murali explained:

Discussions regarding the dealer commission with the Oil Corporations are scheduled in Mumbai today (Friday, 4th November). If the Oil Corporations do not accept the demand for an increase in the commission, there will be a protest by closing the petrol bunks for long duration. The petrol bunks may operate between 9.00 AM and 6.00 PM. Weekend holidays will be given to the petrol bunks just as practiced in the banks.
