The series of Mahatma Gandhi 1996 banknotes have been laden with more security features than those issued before. Here are some of them.
The Rs. 10, Rs. 20 and Rs. 50 notes have a fully embedded security thread. The Rs. 100 note has a windowed security thread. You can see this thread as partially exposed and partially embedded. When you hold it against light, you can see this thread as one continuous line. This thread contains the words Bharat in the Devanagari script and RBI appearing alternately.
A latent image of the denominations 20, 50 100 are shown on the vertical band on the right side of Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait. We can see the value only when the banknote is held horizontally and light allowed to fall on it at 45 degrees; otherwise this feature appears only as a vertical band.
You will find that between the vertical band and the portrait, there is the word RBI in micro lettering on the Rs. 10 note. Notes of Rs.20 and above also contain the denominational value of the banknotes. This feature can be seen by us better under a magnifying glass.
Raised printing has been introduced on the left of the watermark window, on the obverse, that it front, on all banknotes except Rs.10/- banknote. This feature is in different shapes for various denominations and helps the visually impaired to identify the denomination
You will find that the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, Reserve Bank seal, Guarantee and promise clause, Asoka Pillar Emblem and RBI Governor`s signature are printed in intaglio i.e. in raised prints in Rs.20, Rs.50 and Rs.100 banknotes.
The number panels of the banknotes are printed in fluorescent ink. Our banknotes also have optical fibres. You can see both when the banknotes are exposed to ultra-violet lamp. Our banknotes also contain the Mahatma Gandhi watermark with a light and shade effect and multi-directional lines in the watermark window.
